Alcoholism is a biopsychosocial disease based on a person's dependence on alcohol ("alcohol" in Arabic "intoxicating"). It is one of the forms of deviant (deviant) behavior.
Alcoholism as a disease was first described in detail in the middle of the 19th century. Swedish physician Magnus Huse, although it has been known since antiquity. According to the international classification of diseases by the World Health Organization, alcoholism is a condition (mental and usually also physical) resulting from the consumption of alcohol and characterized by a constant or periodic need for it. An alcoholic in the full sense of the word is a person for whom alcohol has become as necessary a component of life as water and food.
A patient with alcoholism is ready to do anything for the sake of getting alcohol, despite the negative consequences of its consumption for himself and others. On the one hand, people are looking for an "outlet in a bottle" when they cannot find a place in life, when they feel discord between themselves and the world around them. On the other hand, excessive alcohol consumption in itself leads to the marginalization of the individual, his exclusion from normal life.
Therefore, alcoholism is both a consequence and a cause of social ill-being. Thus, the term "alcoholism" has two main meanings: it is an individual's illness associated with his personal characteristics, and social pathology associated with the development of society as a whole.
Myths about alcoholism
You can always stop. Indeed, it is possible, but very difficult. In the human body, alcohol is produced in scanty doses, it is vital for certain vital processes. But a person who drinks a lot and often stops producing alcohol: why try, if it will be so ?! In addition, at the serious stages of alcoholism there comes a time when a person is sick not because he "drank", but because he "did not finish drinking." The so-called withdrawal syndrome (aka "withdrawal", an irresistible desire to "hangover") sets in. And, if after the "drunkenness" it becomes easier, this is a very serious and alarming signal. This is already a psychophysical addiction, as a result of which a person can lose interest in everything in life, except for drinking, "sink" and lose his human appearance. And the road back for him will be extremely difficult. Earlier alarming symptoms: drinking more often than once or twice a week, even if it be a "glass for mood" or "for appetite", loss of self-control, irritability and nervousness when sober, which are removed with a small dose of alcohol. When something like this arises, it's time to turn to professionals, that is, doctors.
Can be cured without the knowledge of the patient. Experts categorically warn against "self-medication" even with an elementary cold. Moreover, with such a serious and unpredictable disease like alcoholism. There are several reasons. First, the organisms, the degree of their "wear and tear", the burden of transferred or chronic ailments are different for everyone, and therefore one cannot apply the same methods to everyone, each case is unique. Secondly, the same food additives and homeopathic remedies (which treat, as they say, "with the same wedge") can cause an acute allergic reaction, lead to dire consequences, sometimes even death. Only a well-trained specialist is able to choose the most correct drug treatment based on the results of analyzes, conversations with a patient, and consultations with a psychologist. He will also prescribe a special regime, he can tell relatives and friends how to behave correctly in certain difficult situations.
An alcoholic can be shamed or intimidated. Practicing doctors distinguish two main types of behavior of relatives of an alcoholic. The first one is blackmail (if you drink, I'll leave, I'll die, I'll kick you out into the street, and so on). The second is an appeal to conscience (look where you are going, what example you set for children, a bottle is dearer to you than us, etc.). Both are extremely rarely able to really stop the drinker. Much more often, the opposite effect is observed: the feeling of guilt and shame drives the patient into such severe depression, there is only one "way out" from which: to drink to forget. Therefore, having noticed an addiction to alcohol behind your dear person, have the courage to consult with a psychologist on your own, get expert advice, and determine the correct line of behavior. If, of course, he is really dear to you.
"Coding" can solve everything. The so-called "torpedo" used in "coding" is a powerful drug that, when alcohol enters the body, causes a terrible allergic reaction, up to a coma and death. Alternatively, a "numbered" injection is used. It has the same properties as the "torpedo", because it is not for nothing that doctors, before doing it, take a receipt from the patient that in case of death they are not to blame. This treatment is based on the fear of pain and death. But at the same time, we must not forget that an alcoholic (even a cured person and not drinking for several months or years) is a person with a disturbed psyche, prone to severe depression. In such a state, the temptation to drink a glass of vodka and forever "suffer" even as a result of a banal quarrel, lack of money, troubles at work may be stronger than the instinct of self-preservation.
The hospital will definitely be cured. Hospitals and dispensaries do not cure (within the "standard time", 3 weeks, this is impossible), but take them out of the state of binge and select the best treatment methods. Being there is far from a sanatorium. In hospitals there are wards for violent (in fact, a real insane asylum), completely deserted, alcoholics are often in the immediate vicinity of drug addicts (for those, as you know, "withdrawal" is much more difficult). There are bars on the windows. Not every psyche can handle it. The main treatment comes after leaving the hospital, "at liberty", where there are many irritating factors and temptations. And at least half of the success depends on the people around the patient, their behavior and attitudes. By the way, getting to the clinic is very expensive for relatives, both literally and figuratively. So, if a person is treated anonymously, more precisely under a fictitious name, then being in a hospital can cost about a thousand rubles a day. If he goes to bed "officially", according to his own documents, then he is treated free of charge, but in this case he is automatically registered with a narcologist. And this is several years of deprivation of the right to drive a car, carry and store firearms, and other restrictions.
Alcoholism is incurable, all alcoholism treatment offers are just a way to siphon money. Treatment of alcoholism is a complex process, but recovery is possible and even inevitable if all the recommendations of specialists are followed and the patient's own focused activity is carried out.
Treatment of alcoholism (reducing the need for alcohol, reducing the amount of alcohol consumed, the final cessation of use) is the use of certain medications and medical procedures. Alcohol dependence has not only a biochemical, but also a psychological, social and spiritual basis, the treatment of alcoholism requires changes in all these areas, which requires the cooperation and conscious activity of the patient.
There are medicines (powders, potions, tinctures ...) that treat alcoholism without the knowledge of the patient himself. There are no such drugs, treatment of alcoholism is more like rehabilitation after a serious operation, a person learns to live in a new way, accepting the inevitable restrictions (refusal of alcohol) and realizing the opening opportunities.
Treatment for alcoholism can return a person to "normal" drinking. If addiction is formed, drinking alcohol in any dose will always lead to a loss of control; however, as a result of effective treatment of alcoholism, the patient gains the opportunity to live joyfully and fruitfully without alcohol.
Refusal from alcohol in the process of alcoholism treatment leads to a gray, dull, painful existence; the depression that comes after withdrawal will never end. Feelings of depression, melancholy, and hopelessness are characteristic of the initial stage of alcoholism treatment, but even in the worst case (in the absence of qualified help), depression lasts no more than a few months; just sobriety helps to gain a taste and fullness of life.
Treatment of alcoholism makes sense only at the initial stages of the disease, and if a person has already "completely drunk himself", you cannot help him. The patient can be helped at any stage of the disease, often in the later stages of alcoholism treatment is even more effective - losses and problems as a result of use help to stay in a sober life.
An alcoholic is a weak-willed person; alcoholism treatment is the conviction of the patient that it is time for him to take up his mind. The alcoholic has both the mind and the will, they are simply subject to the disease, the alcoholic does this because he simply cannot do otherwise; alcoholism treatment is a process of liberation from the disease, a person gets the opportunity to choose and live differently.
