Few of us can imagine how soon his name will become known to the whole world. And after a century and a half, his name became known to the whole world.
At the time, he was just a failed actor, an unknown engineer, builder and inventor of unnecessary machines for sawing wood and drilling stone. Yes, in his personal life, everything turned out not in the best way - the man had several illegitimate children vegetating in poverty, and besides, from numerous abandoned girlfriends.
Isaac Singer was born on October 27, 1811 in the small town of Troy, in the state of New York, in a family of immigrants from Germany. Singer's father repaired carriages, and the boy himself grew up on the street, becoming a notorious hooligan. In his town, Isaac became famous for his antics - he transplanted garden plants, dressed up dogs in school uniforms, and decorated banknotes. Singer also loved theater. At the age of 12, Isaac realized that he did not want to study, then his parents arranged for him as an apprentice mechanic in Rochester. Singer quickly mastered the basics of his business, but it seemed boring to him.
Until the age of 20, the restless Isaac traveled around the country until he found a job as a mechanic in Boston. The young man had a passion for mechanisms since childhood, he loved all sorts of things. It was in Boston that Singer created his first inventions - the sawmill and the woodworking machine. But these products did not have commercial success, and soon the world of the beautiful won the material one - Singer decided to become an actor. Despite the fact that the young artist had good external data and knew how to convince, he also failed to gain success on this basis.
After Singer left the stage, he got a job as a simple handyman on the construction of the canal. This work was very hard - the rocks had to be chiselled by hand. It is not surprising that during the moments of a short rest, Singer thought about how this process could be mechanized. As a result, a new drill was born, in 1839 Singer patented his invention. Suddenly, the discovery brought a huge sum of 2 thousand dollars in a few months. Singer was so delighted that he set to work again - the money he earned went to the opening of a new theater troupe, which lasted only 5 years.
And again Singer was left with nothing, this time he did not dare to tempt fate. Working in a humble printing house brought some means, but the passion for invention did not go anywhere. Singer caught fire with a new idea - he decided to improve the typesetting machine. For the sake of this project, a workshop was removed, where the working model was born. However, it never came to its sale - an explosion in the room destroyed Singer's invention. He had to look for a new printing house, but there, unexpectedly, his former passion was forgotten. The new workshop was owned by a businessman who sold sewing machines. Only those constantly broke down.
It was a real challenge for Singer! It took him only 10 days to eliminate the main drawback of the machines. The discovery made Singer rich. And he just placed the shuttle horizontally, which allowed the threads not to get tangled. A board in the form of a table was proposed for the fabric, and a leg-holder for the needle. She allowed the seam to be made continuous. Singer also attached a foot pedal to the machine, which made it possible for the seamstress to work with the fabric with both hands. These simple innovations have been the foundation of sewing machines for a long time. Singer defended his invention with a large package of patents, which included several thousand documents.
Singer himself did not invent the sewing machine and never claimed to have done so. By the time its own design appeared on the market, there were already several models. Singer's first car was sold for $ 100. An amazing thing - the very first sample of the product not only covered all the expenses for its development, but also made a profit. But no one wanted to buy it right away. Men did not want to pay big money for a car, because women did an excellent job and so with a needle and thread.
In the same workshops that earned money from seamstresses, the novelty was needed even less. To stimulate demand, the inventor took an unusual step. In those days, any broken mechanisms were immediately sent to a landfill or repaired for a long time in factory conditions. And Singer offered his customers the opportunity to order all the necessary spare parts themselves and repair faults quickly.
The appearance of that sewing machine coincided with the appearance of the tenth child of the inventor himself, Mary Sponsler became the mother. Married to his legal wife, Catherine Singer, the inventor had two children. But the dubious status of her mistress irritated Mary, which is why she tortured Singer. As a result, he got divorced and legalized his relationship. However, the family idyll soon ended - the hero's lover began to pay attention to a certain brunette Mary McGonial.
These visits gave birth to five more children. And soon a third Mary, Walter, appeared in Singer's life. She also awarded her beloved child. Isaac Merrit Singer decided this whole Gordian knot in an original way - he left all the ladies of his heart and married the Frenchwoman Isabelle Sommersville. By the way, she is considered a model of the Statue of Liberty in Paris.
But Singer had not only love talents, but also a passion for attracting talented people. In 1851, The Singer Manufacturing was born. Singer opened it with lawyer Edward Clarke. The headquarters is located in New York. Singer convinced a partner and an investor to invest in the construction of a plant that would mass-produce interchangeable sewing machines.
She began to supply her equipment not only to sewing housewives, but also to entire sewing factories. Thanks to Singer, terms such as focus groups and direct marketing emerged. The head of the company began to produce cars aimed at ordinary housewives. Singer understood that the main thing was to convince them of the need for such a purchase, and then the wives would influence their husbands themselves.
But how could you go directly to the housewives, because there was no television then? Then Singer began looking for clients in theaters, posting his advertisements in programs. Other customers were found by him in churches - descriptions of sewing machines were distributed right during the sermons.
Singer turned out to be a good marketer, he began to sell his goods in installments. In 1861, European sales exceeded American ones. Thanks to this step, by 1863, up to 20 thousand cars were sold a year. The firm became a corporation with a registered capital of half a million dollars. And they made cars at several factories specially built for this. The rich inventor himself gradually moved away from the daily hustle and bustle, we will appoint the first hired president, Insley Hopper, to manage our company.
He immediately began to implement the very ambitious plans of Isaac Singer with an international scope. In 1867, the first plant outside America was opened, it was located in Glasgow, Scotland. Already for this, many call "Singer Company" the oldest multinational company.
At 64, Isaac Merritt Singer died as a wealthy and respected member of American society. That year, his company sold about 200,000 sewing machines annually. In addition to business, the man left behind 24 children.
In 1902, a plant was opened in Podolsk, which produced cars with the Russified Singer logo. So the manufacturer became popular in Russia, from here the products were sold to Turkey, China, Japan. On the basis of that plant, the Podolsk brand appeared after the revolution, but the memory of the famous brand and its quality remained.
By the mid-1990s, the pace of the company's development slowed down, it became unprofitable. This led to the fact that the capacities of "The Singer Company" began to be transferred to poor countries - China and Brazil. And in 2001 the company celebrated its 150th anniversary. True, he was accompanied by rumors of an impending bankruptcy. Thanks to this background and an official statement, the company, under US law, received protection from creditors for a time.
This helped her to reorganize production, focusing on the production of inexpensive traditional sewing machines. After all, they are so popular in Southeast Asia, Brazil. The Singer name does its job. It is no coincidence that the brand is known to almost everyone today, and sewing machines bearing the name of their creator serve 100 million people in 67 countries.
